The Bristol School of Self Defence was established in 2008 by Lea Welsford and Paul
Hobday, with the help and support of Kevin O’Hagan. Realising the importance of self
protection in today's society, the school was formed to give people the opportunity
to learn the skills that are essential to preventing and surviving an attack.
Timed to coincide with National Personal Safety Day, our first self defence class
started on Monday 13th October 2008. National Personal Safety Day, run by the Suzy
Lamplugh Trust, is an annual event aimed at raising awareness of the simple, practical
solutions that everyone can use to help avoid violence and aggression in today's
society. It's about helping people to live safer, more confident lives, which is
the purpose of the Bristol School of Self Defence. Personal safety, also referred
to as ‘self protection’, is a major part of the courses we teach. Our courses are
designed to teach you about self protection and how to avoid dangerous situations,
as well as teaching you the physical self defence techniques needed should an attack
occur.
Suitable for people of all abilities the self defence techniques are easy to learn,
regardless of fitness or experience. Our experienced instructors ensure that all
training is carried out in a friendly, controlled manner. Forget the fancy throws
and kicks that you see in the movies, the techniques we teach are simple and effective,
having been developed over many years and tested in real life situations. The methods
taught by the Bristol School of Self Defence come directly from Kevin O'Hagan - one
of the world's leading authorities on the subject. The physical skills have been
taken from a mixture of different martial arts systems, in particular combat jujutsu,
and have been thoroughly tested to ensure they do actually work under pressure.
Whether it be protection in your job or protection in your personal life, learning
these skills will give peace of mind to you and your family.
Equal Opportunities Policy
The Bristol School of Self Defence is committed to the
equality of opportunity for all instructors and students. Our policy is to ensure
that everyone is treated equally regardless of race, religion, ethnic or national
origin, sex, sexual orientation, disability, family circumstances, marital status,
age or any other reason whatsoever. Instructors will take a positive lead in ensuring
this policy is maintained and students will be expected to follow this lead.
